early voters 50% voting for president obama. obama, 44% for mitt romney. election day that means mitt romney has to get 53% of the vote in florida if he's going to win. so that is a pretty hefty tag to run up. that's all according to the obama campaign. in iowa over a third of voters have already voted there. and among those early voters, you can see 64% of those are supporting barack obama. 35% of them are supporting mitt romney. and that means that mitt romney is going to need to win 59% of election-day voters. in north carolina, nearly half of all ballots have already been cast. and of those who have already been cast, 58% of those early voters favor the president. 41% of those favor mitt romney. so mitt romney is going to need to win 57% of north carolina on election day. we're seeing that pattern play out in the other swing states, too like nevada, virginia, wisconsin. so the republicans are trying to make up ground. in florida we're seeing this because republican leaders are on a two-day bus tour promoting early voting. here is romney florida campaign chairman adam putnam. >> we

your own chuck todd earlier in the day in d a brilliant illustration of why the romney campaign has to do this. because ohio really is falling off the table for them. if they rely only on an ohio win, they're probably going to lose. they're trying desperately to open up a new front but, you know, my colleague that spoke earlier mentioned the hurricane. believe me. i think there's a dotted line between what happens on election day and the images out of new jersey and elsewhere. fema has always been a sort of talisman for your view of the proper role of federal government. go back to bill clinton who elevated it to a cabinet-level agency. it got better. george w. bush demoted in to some sub agency within homeland security and look what happens to new orleans. we are seeing before our very eyes a stark difference between mitt romney saying we should privatize everything including fema and barack obama working with even republican governors like chris christie on a federal relief effort. that's a huge talisman for what you believe the proper role of government is in society and i believ

romney suddenly getting that extra push over the last four, five days of this race and winning next tuesday? what's the strongest argument you've heard? >> well, i don't think there is a good argument for him getting a kind of issue push, a kind of free media narrative push. i think at this point, it's that the turnout assumptions that a lot of pollsters are making are wrong. and that republican -- optimistic republican projections about what the electorate are going to look like are more accurate than pollsters who are saying there will be a solid african-american vote, latino vote, different members of the coalition which might not be at 2008 levels but get him where he needs to be, and estimating what the republican turnout will be. that has to be the reality on election day for mitt romney to win. maybe without the storm, if romney had been able to drive some of the stories, i would mention i think this benghazi story got a little bit serious. there's new reporting, new documents have been found in that compound that don't look great for the administration, but it's kind of gett
